Assistant Superintendent Position

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent manages most aspects of the club’s agronomy operation. This position reports to the club’s Golf Course Superintendent.

 SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent’s overarching responsibility is to maximize the golf courses’ condition and health within the budget provided. 

  • Assists in the preparation of the club’s annual agronomy budget and financial goals.
  • Holds all agronomy department associates accountable for providing top-notch golf course playing conditions.
  • Direct and delegate activities to the grounds staff.
  • Has daily communication with the Golf Course Superintendent and Head Golf Professional regarding the golf course conditions and its playability.
  • Keeps all permits and licenses pertaining to the agronomy department up to date.
  • Manages all chemicals and hazardous substances safely and according to the law.
  • Assists with the implementation of all fertilizer and pesticide programs.
  • Responsible for the operation of all maintenance equipment, along with calibration and operation of each.
  • Maintains a safe work environment for all agronomy associates, providing regular training to them in this area.
  • Assists in overseeing all capital improvements to the golf course.
  • Help hire and train all maintenance personnel.

REQUIRED SKILLS

The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent of a Jones Creek Golf Club must have the following skills:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, or horticulture.
  • Experience at a golf course with warm-season grasses.
  • Strong knowledge of turfgrass species, soil management, and irrigation systems.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to analyze course conditions and implement effective agronomic solutions.
  • Leadership, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions; high, precarious places; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • Able to meet and perform the physical requirements and work effectively in an environment typical of this position.
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Technical Knowledge:Experience in turfgrass science, pest control, irrigation systems, and equipment use.
  • Problem-Solving:Decision-making skills when facing weather-related challenges, equipment failures, or turf issues.
  • Communication:Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with staff and communicate with golfers and management.
  • Attention to Detail:Focused on ensuring every detail of the course is maintained to deliver a top-quality golfing experience.
