REPORTS TO: Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The 2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for assisting in the oversite of the operation, and maintenance of the golf course to ensure optimal playing conditions. This includes assisting the agronomy team, attending the turfgrass, maintaining the landscape, and ensuring that all environmental and safety regulations are met. The 2nd Assistant Superintendent assists with projects, and assists the management team in ensuring the course is ready for daily play, tournaments, and special events.

CLASSIFICATION: Salaried – Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Agronomy - Golf Course Maintenance

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in interviewing, and selecting crew members; onboard and orient new crew members to the location and policies and procedures; learns how to conduct performance reviews; rewards, coaches and disciplining staff.
  • Learns to provide input on projects, staff development, employee evaluations, discipline and termination issues and wage increases.
  • Communicates regularly with the crew, superintendent, golf staff and members.
  • Communicates with the crew any updates or changes to procedures and processes on the maintenance of the golf course.
  • Scouts the golf course on a regular basis for insect, weed, and disease problems. Diagnose any observations and take corrective action after discussion with Superintendent unless situation dictates otherwise
  • In the absence of the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent supervises the grounds crew, providing direction, training, and scheduling to ensure efficient and safe course maintenance.
  • Maintain irrigation systems, ensuring that they are fully functional and that the course receives adequate water.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to pesticide application, water usage, environmental protection, and safety.
  • Monitor weather patterns and make decisions on course closures, water management, and frost delays.
  • Maintain records on pesticide and fertilizer applications, equipment maintenance, and turf conditions.
  • Stay up to date on the latest trends and best practices in turfgrass management and golf course maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership, communication, training, support and attention to safety programs, systems and techniques.
  • Actively participates in the safety program by attending meetings, providing and documenting safety training and offering improvement suggestions.
  • Demonstrates and documents safety training and orientation for all employees. This will include the use of PPE (personal protective equipment) and safe equipment operation.
  • Assists with goal setting and objectives for continued monitoring and improvement of safety programs.
  • Performs risk assessment as part of decision and problem solving process.
  • Takes personal responsibility for the safety of the team every day.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or Associates degree in Agronomy or Turf Grass Management or related field.
  • Valid GA Pesticide License or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Competent on all equipment used on the golf course including calibration of sprayers and spreaders.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations, including pesticide handling and application procedures.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities.
  • Participates in professional organizations such as GCSAA and GGCSA.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills with the ability to motivate and mentor the crew.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Technical Knowledge: Experience in turfgrass science, pest control, irrigation systems, and equipment use.
  • Problem-Solving: Decision-making skills when facing weather-related challenges, equipment failures, or turf issues.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with staff and communicate with golfers and management.
  • Attention to Detail: Focused on ensuring every detail of the course is maintained to deliver a top-quality golfing experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This role requires working outdoors in all types of weather conditions. The Superintendent may need to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays, particularly during peak golf season and for tournaments.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift, push, or pull heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.).
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, kneel, and bend for extended periods.
  • Capability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and inclement weather.

SALARY: $46,000 + Depending on Experience
